about

A chapter that still rages like fire in the brief history of the international jazz outfit MOUNT KUJO is their momentous residency at the seminal multicultural hub of Melbourne: Bar Oussou.

Those lucky enough to have experienced the band at one of those legendary monthly shows would have fond memories of these wild, sweaty nights: MOUNT KUJO, in all their wisdom and curiosity, formulated the perfect concoction for a cathartic Friday night freak out: Tight jams, low on key changes but high in technique and energy, using the old jazz adage of theme-solo-theme to let all the band members have a turn to thrill the audience; drums pounding out infectious polyrhythms while bandleader-guitarist Max Myland raises the roof by hoarsely screaming at the band, vocally conducting the movements of their original tunes, just like a live Mingus record.

Add to this the sonic explorations they partake in by hooking up their brass instruments to myriads of pedals that push the band into psychedelic territory, completely improvised jams that sound like the band went back in time and took delay pedal lessons from King Crimson and colourful outfits to lighten the mood on stage, and you are close to the joy and excitement MOUNT KUJO bring to a live show.

Going back over the superbly recorded sessions, the band have decided to release their favourite songs plus one of their impressive, completely improvised jams that they are well known for. Alongside hints of their biggest influences like The Budos Band, Ikebe Shakedown and The Souljazz Orchestra, MOUNT KUJO are a product of their own surroundings, representing the melting pot of a burgeoning Australian Afro-jazz community, and how that sound translates to the hot Melbourne inner-city culture. The excitement of this live adaptation is heard distinctly during these extremely personal Oussou sessions.

Listen back to feel the heat and hear the sound of those sweet horns of pre-lockdown freedom!
